Dawley Social Club History

The building was originally opened in 1911 to serve the local  mining community until 1928 when it was established as  Dawley War Memorial Hall.

Dawley Social Club evolved in the 1960’s when the local  Council acquired the building and transferred it to the      community of Dawley as a social and community hub.  George Chetwood a prominent local figure, played a          significant role in supporting the War Memorial Hall and the  subsequent development of the Social Club, in his efforts to  assist ex-servicemen. In September 1974 a few months after  George had died the George Chetwood Lounge was opened  at the club in recognition of his work over the years.

In 2014, the Club's committee successfully purchased the  building from the Telford & Wrekin Council after a period of  growth and organisation, honouring a 1928 covenant        ensuring the land's use for the benefit of Dawley residents.

In 2025 the Social Club was registered as a Community    Interest Company to better safeguard its future, and to      enable the committee to look for better ways to use the  building to support and engage it's local community and to  maintain the building infrastructure going forward.
